Our gift from the land – Ngā hua a te whenua

Tohu Wines is the world's first Māori owned wine
company. Since 1998, Tohu has focused on producing
wines from New Zealand's premier grape growing regions.

The Tohu winemaking philosophy is to create wines that
capture the flavours of each region’s unique landscapes,
whilst upholding respect and protection of the land for
future generations. Our vineyards are certified Sustainable
Winegrowing New Zealand. We see this as an integral part
of our values, working with the environment without
compromising quality and integrity. Our state of the art
winery is based in Marlborough, New Zealand.

Our Reserve wines are each named in honour of a kaumātua
of the Māori owners of Tohu Wines, the Wakatū Incorporation,
a collective comprised of four iwi (tribes) from the top of
the South Island. A kaumātua is the name given to a respected
elder of a Māori whanau or family. It is recognition of the
significant contribution they have made to their community.

Tohu is 100% owned by Kono NZ. Kono is a vertically integrated,
family owned Māori food and beverage producer – an artisan
producer, and exporter of award-winning wine, cider, seafood,
fruit and natural fruit bars. Māori are the indigenous people
of Aotearoa New Zealand. As a Māori company, we have a strong
spiritual connection to the land, to our culture and a tradition
of kaitiakitanga, guardianship of our natural resources. Kono
means a traditional Maori food basket made of woven flax, and
the products we offer to the world combine to make a basket
of food.
